She is from a Jewish family (originally from Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire). Her maternal grandparents called her Mary, while her parents called her Debra . The family moved to California when Debra was five. She fell in love with acting in high school but kept it a secret from her family.

Winger earned an Emmy Award nomination for her title role as the mother of a Columbine shooting victim in the 2005 television film Dawn Anna, directed by Arliss Howard. But try as Winger did to stop playing make-believe for a living, she still felt the call of acting, and, since she was in the northeast, she took to the stage.
